For many years the definitive text on Energy Therapy was Energy Medicine by Donna Eden (ISBN 0-7499-1928-0), but over the years and after many reprints it is beginning to look dated, although I would still recommend it as a base for study.
There is now a new kid on the block, Energy Psychology Interactive by David Feinstein. They are clearly keeping it in the family as David is Donna’s husband! David’s book is more than a book, but is a 40-hour professional training programme for psychotherapists and other healing professionals. Very good it is too – teaching from the basics to the more advanced levels of Energy Psychology. I would strongly recommend it.
This is the latest of six books by David, who has undertaken research, teaching and counselling in psychotherapy over the last 30 years. He is currently National Director of the Energy Medicine Institute in Oregon.
Energy Psychology Interactive was developed in consultation with an Advisory Board of twenty-four of the recognised leaders in the field of energy psychology. It presents a paradigm-stretching blend of Western and Eastern healing systems mixing Western Complementary Medicine with Eastern healing and spiritual practices, including acupressure, yoga and qi gong. It presents many differing forms of Energy Therapy in outline but identifies basic assumptions and common principals between the various approaches.
It is not solely a practical instruction but includes discussion of the underlying mechanisms involved in the success of these systems and introduces referenced trials of the methods including the first very large scale clinical trials, and presents empirical evidence as a basis for the use of energy therapy.
The “new” therapies are shown to be compatible to and complementary to other forms of therapy and the book discusses how they can be readily integrated into other forms of psychological treatment and how it can be used to help with different types of client.
The book comes with a computer based interactive CD of the same name (ISBN 0-9725207-8-3). On first sight the idea did not impress me. I am something of a Luddite when it comes to computer versions of books – I like to sit in a chair with the weight of a book in my lap! However, David seems to have got the mixture right here. You still have the weight of the book and I could not fail to be impressed by the interactive learning made possible by the CD and by the live video clips which clearly demonstrated various techniques.
The book and CD can be purchased separately, but I have been won over and would strongly recommend you buy both and really step forward in your understanding and use of Energy Therapy
